Your food needs calories to be digested. This is often called the “thermic effect” of food.

What’s important to note is that protein has a MUCH higher thermic effect (25-30%) compared to carbs (6-8%) and fat (2-3%).

Put simply, that means for every 100 calories of protein you eat, up to 30 of them are burned off before they’re absorbed, as compared to just 2-3 from fat and 6-8 from carbs.
